His interest in Elvis Presley’s music from a young age was the first thing that introduced him to music. His mother bought him his first record, “Elvis Presley Forever”, when he was six. At 13 or 14 years old, he became interested in DJing by listening to popular music stations. He began DJing at his friends’ birthday parties in 1987.
In 1988, he met Ugur Gundogan, one of the best DJs at the time. Together, they played music at parties at ODTU and the Turkish American Association. While finishing high school, he earned pocket money by DJing. In 1989, he started working at the popular Ankara venue Airport Disco, which became the first stop in his professional career.
In 1994, he set up his own radio station with a 250-watt transmitter built by his father. Mix FM 103.4 quickly became one of the city’s most popular stations. In 1997, he opened a record shop also named “Mix.” He sold imported records from the UK and Germany, provided DJ training, and organized major festivals and parties.
He started producing his first amateur music tracks in 1998. He tested the tracks he created using the “Magix” program at the venues where he performed. “Boncuk,” a track he composed for his deceased dog, propelled him onto the international stage (2005). Released under the Pangea Recordings label, it was soon played and supported by renowned DJs such as John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk, and Hernán Cattaneo.
Sertac states that his productions are influenced by solo artists and groups such as Depeche Mode, Martin Gore, Marc Almond, George Michael, Mogollar and Cem Karaca. He believes the most important element of a track is the melody, followed by technique, rhythm, and other elements. He believes that good work should be listened to with the same excitement 20 years later. He argues that music is not mathematics but a feeling and cannot be learned.
Sertac has performed in many countries around the world, and he is present on all digital music platforms with his newly established record label, Kaya Records TR. He continues to produce house music and its subgenres.
